I received an request for a chess set the other day. It's been years since I've used my lathe and the pieces are all less than 3.5 inches tall and one inch and less wide. The smallest things I have ever turned on a lathe. If you make a mistake on a bowl, you can generally fix it. With these little pieces, one slip and the piece could be in the scrap bin.
Once I get a good design, the trick will be to make 2 Kings that look the same, 2 Queens that are almost identical, as well as 4 Bishops, Knights and Rooks, and finally 16 Pawns that look the same.
I made a chess set back in the early 1970's that I still have, but I have gained experience since then. I wasn't allowed to use the lathe, the pieces were too small. I made due using dowels for the Pawns and Bishops shaping them using other methods.
An interesting change from what I've have been making.
